One of the more popular applications for a metal detection system is in-line gravity feed products.  The Goring Kerr Model 402 is commonly used in dry powder installations where the grain, plastic pellets or similar materials are free flowing.  The metal detector is installed inline allowing the product stream to flow freely past the sensing head.  With the model 402 a flapper reject device is used to divert the flow in to a reject bin.  This method of rejecting contaminated product allows for quicker response and minimal product loss.

When used in standard grain mills the Goring Kerr model 402 can offer high levels of sensitivity.  Common sized pipes such as the 6″ and 8″ systems can detect ferrous metals as small as 1.25 millimeter.

What to look for when buying a used metal detector

When purchasing a used Goring Kerr metal detector system for gravity feed applications consider the following.

  1. How far is the free fall flow?
  2. Will the pipe diameter handle your flow requirements?
  3. Can the reject flapper move the weight of your product stream?
  4. Where will the rejected product go?
  5. Will you be able to test the detection and rejection of product correctly?

Goring Kerr founded the industrial metal detector back in the early 1900's. Since then they have engineered a wide range of metal detectors used throughout the world. Well known for their food metal detectors Goring Kerr can be found in bakery, pharmaceutical, lumber, plastic, textile and grain applications. Through the years they have manufactured models including the DSP 3, DSP 2, DSP 1, Tek 21 and Tektamet to name a few. Still today you will find Goring Kerr metal detectors 40 years old operating and detecting metal as well as many of today's new machines.
